One Night in Tokyo
Beat 'Em UpClient: BEAST IN BLACK
An old-school brawler built to promote BEAST IN BLACK's album — neon Tokyo streets, Streets of Rage-style combat.
The brief
For a band whose whole aesthetic already runs on 80s arcade nostalgia, a beat 'em up wasn't a gimmick bolted onto the album campaign — it was the most honest format available. Every enemy wave keeps time with the record's own synth-metal energy.
The game gave BEAST IN BLACK's fanbase a way to spend real minutes inside the album's world, not just seconds scrolling past a cover-art post.
Results
These are unique people who actively took part in the campaign — finishing a run and entering their score for the contests and promos attached to it. Total plays were far higher: the game runs on the client’s own domain, so this counts engaged participants, not traffic.
And one thing no budget line covers: James Rolfe — the Angry Video Game Nerd — sat down for a roundtable with BEAST IN BLACK, published on the band’s own channel, with the game among the topics. His verdict: “It looks very authentic. It looks just like an old school beat ’em up… And it’s hilarious. I love it.”
