Veni Vidi Vitality

Sport Games

Client: Team Vitality

Four mini-sports for Team Vitality — obstacle course, long jump, swimming and archery — all played with two buttons, one under each hand.

The brief

An esports organisation asking for a sports game is a better joke than it looks. Veni Vidi Vitality takes the club’s Roman motto literally and drops it into four events: obstacle course, long jump, swimming, archery.

The whole design sits on a hard constraint: two inputs and nothing else. A button on the left, a button on the right, one under each hand. All four sports have to be expressed with those two, which is what keeps the game free of instructions — nobody reads a tutorial for two buttons — and what makes it identical on a phone, where the two sides of the screen do the same job.

The leaderboard sits over all four, so the fastest way to lose an afternoon is to be beaten at archery by somebody who had never played it before today.

The build

4 sports in one game
2 buttons, one under each hand
5 projects with Team Vitality

The game runs on the client’s side and we have no play figures to claim here. What this one demonstrates is the format: four mechanics that need no instructions, because two buttons cannot need any.
